Gode Mannerys & Conduct for Gentry

Clothing

Please do not wear a plain white, red, green, or yellow belt. White belts are worn by Knights, an earned rank in the SCA.  Red belts are worn by Squires, green belts by apprentices, and yellow belts by protégés.  These are people working at obtaining earned ranks.
Please do not wear a white or red scarf. White scarves are worn by Dons, a rapier fighter who has obtained the highest level.  Red scarves are worn by their cadets (people who are studying to become Dons).
Please do not wear crowns, tiaras, or metallic bands wider 1/2 inch. These items are worn by members of the royalty.
Please do not wear a plain unadorned chain. This is won by Knights as a symbol of their rank.
Please no not call yourself "Lord" or "Lady". Lord and Lady are earned ranks.
Please don't wear horns, wings, or pointy ears. We are trying recreate the past, not fantasy.
Please attempt to wear period clothing. Our time period is 600 A.D. to 1600 A.D., although some people go a little earlier and wear Roman chitins.  The simplest garb to make is a t-tunic.  For help in creating garb contact our hospitaller.

Court & Feast

Please turn off cell phones during court. Use period drinking containers.
Please do not talk during court. Bring a tablecloth or blanket to cover your ice chest.

Other

Bow when walking past the thrown or by someone wearing a crown. This shows respect to the office.
Refer to a person wearing a crown as Your Excellency.  The only exception is the: King & Queen - Your Majesty and Prince and Princess - Your Highness.   Don't worry if you get the terms confused.  When in doubt, refer to the person as His/Her Excellency.  Most of the time this is the correct address.
Tell people you're new! We were all new once and remember that feeling.  Let us know, so we can help you and tell you everything you want know.
Ask questions! How else are you going to learn?  We LOVE to talk about this hobby of ours.  So ask a question and prepare for the onslaught.
Volunteer! This is a great way to get to know people and events are lots more fun when you help run them.  So sign up for gate, help carry water for fighters and the populace, become a server at feast, fish a royal out of a raging river.

Most importantly - HAVE FUN!!
